I shouldn’t say everyone…. But shame on Newsweek and Quickhoney. I’ll get to that in a minute.
This year TIME magazine published a rather progressive magazine cover – The infamous Obama x Shepard Fairey poster. [I should have clarified, Progressive for TIME magazine] Well, it was pretty cool I guess… The fact that street art was now a household thing, the fact that soccer moms across the country were now down with stencil art and the average person was throwing around Shepard Fairey’s name like he was Bob Ross…. Annoyed me a little.
But whatever, it’s good exposure for Shepard Fairey. He deserves it. That dude has been hustling for a LONG time now. I’ve got numerous original OBEY pieces that are about 10 years old, so hopefully his popularity will only increase the value of my art collection.
So back to my post. Shame on you Newsweek and Quickhoney:

Newsweek’s May 4th issue with the “To Boldly Go…” where no man has gone before theme is a bit hysterical and hypocritical. It appears that Newsweek wanted to share in some of that Shepard Fairey excitement. But they probably didn’t want to pay for it. So they paid Quickhoney (a design studio) to create that terribly unoriginal image of Doc Spock. (above) A blatent Shepard Fairey knock off. They couldn’t even come up with a new color way? A new style? It’s all Shepard Fairey. Even the lines used for shading… WOW.
I went to the quickhoney site and it appears that they do some pretty cool pixel art and stuff. But they had to have known that people would notice this…
Shame on you.
